- Answers should be sent to bob@worshipmatters.com.

I was backing up the worship leader one day in a chapel
i was accually the electric guitarist but sometimes i played acoustic for a different sound.
well it was one of those days and we played a partial set( we were recording a live worship album)
and when we went to play second half somthing just didnt sound right. what i mean is it sounded horable.. yup thanks to me, not only was i playing the chorus in stead of the verse ( we usually started with the chorus so i thought he messd up … must have been preocupied when that convo took place when they decided to change that) but i also forgot to take the pick out from the strings, where i had put it during the break
so it sounded like bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz and even a little twwwwwaaaaaaannnnngggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!
thennn STTTTTOOOOOOPPPPPPP that last part was the sound of my man josh telling me that i had the pick there and that we were playing the verse
ha yes embarassing i think God was laughing at me or shall i say with me :)
wow. was the deadline really march 15th? does that mean that jake hunt is going gratis? i would love to send in a story about my most embarrasing moment, but in the ten plus years i’ve played and/or sang in a worship band, nothing is quite so obvious as jake’s story.
but here goes. i started out just doing vocals. not too difficult, even with being the only one doing harmonies most of the time. we lost our keyboardist. since i had had piano lessons as a kid, i gave it a shot. why not?
well, the first time i played keyboards in my worship band, i got so light-headed, i almost passed out. in the midst of a song i found myself swaying. dangerously. and not because i was so filled by the Holy Spirit. i had forgotten to breathe! almost knocked over the keyboard trying to recover because at the last second i grabbed the stand. now my timing was off because i had to think about breathing, too. not just playing. i scared myself and a couple other band members that night at practice. eventually i discovered that singing while i was playing kept me from passing out because then i had to breathe to sing.
Alright I’ll give it a shot, I have a few I could send in. One personally that happened to me, and then just as apart of a team.
One Morning as we began to lead our congregation into worship by playing “How Great Is Our God”. It was running smoothly, nice melodic sounds were coming through the mains, no squeaks in the technical equipment, guitars were nicely in tune, rythmn was not too fast not too slow, and as we sang we seemed to be perfectly in pitch. A sigh of relief passed over the team as we all began worshiping God with ease and excitement that often came with Sunday morning Worship. God’s grace! The congregation began to trickle their way to their seats and began to worship undistractedly. For once there had been no problems, for once we felt we too could worship undistractedly, it all came so easy. But then it happened. My brother the Basist stepped a bit too far up and with too much excitement swung the neck of his bass into the hind part of my mic causing it to rapidly spring towards my face. I being completely lost in worship with eyes closed, was to my horror hit with such power that I stammored backwards away from the keyboard I was playing and in a daze began to laugh uncontrolably. On my face there was left a red mark about the size of the mic head…

The worst thing that ever happened to me occurred after the singing when I started preaching. A godly old lady whose greatest hope was to see the coming of the Lord in her lifetime, had come to church hoping that the sermon would be about the glory of the Second Coming. Instead my sermon was an exposition of one of the commandments (the next in a series). Part way through the message she called out with a voice all could hear, “O God preserve us from the pulpit!” I tried to continue without pretending she hadn’t spoken, but when she repeated her loud lament, I told her bluntly, “Miss Martin, be quiet!” And she was, but she wouldn’t speak to me for months. It left a great impression on me - the young pastor - and made me more sensitive to the hopes and longings of those on the verge of heaven. It wasn’t funny at the time, but it always brings tears to the eyes of those who hear what happened and double up with laughter.
